DRUMMING...
He scanned the horizon for nothing, and found everything. His fingers drummed at the rock that he was sitting on. Not a tune, not a soliloquy, just an idle pattern of finger drums. He dropped his gaze slightly, stared unblinkingly at the water. What was it doing...the water? Rippling, waving, slopping, nothing? He didn't really know. His gaze was unfocused...he was numb. Birds squawked above him, but they didn't register...he was numb. A cool breeze ruffled through his hair, but it didn't register...he was numb. His phone throbbed in his pocket, it probably had been on and off for a while now, but it didn't really register...he was numb. He lowered his gaze further and as if for the first time he noticed his fingers drumming. He let out a half smile, as if he'd seen something vaguely cute. But then the smile quickly faded and he frowned...he'd forgotten that he was numb.
