LITTLE STRAY

“Don’t do that?”
“What?”
“Pull in your shoulders, pull up your knees, drop your eyelids, and pretend you’re some sort of vulnerable little stray.”
“I’m not.”
“Yes you are.”
Silence.
At least you noticed.”
“Always have.”
More silence.
“Does it work?”
He sighed. “Of course it works. You’ll still be doing it at sixty, and guess what?”
“It’ll still work then?”
“It will still work then.”
“Good to know. For the future I mean.”
Gabriel rolled his eyes, looked away, and they descended into another silence.
